Sustainability: First, we are recycling an outmoded industrial building into a higher, long term use. Not a bad start. Second, during demolition and construction, we intend to recycle as much waste into useable stuff. Many of the windows have glass block. If we are careful in demo, much of this can be salvaged and used say in interior walls, atrium space, art objects, wall dividers. All metal will be sold to scrap yard. Any wood will be saved to burn in our HUGE first floor fireplace in the common area.
For sure we are going to have enough photovoltaic panels to break even on elect or even sell power back into the grid. We will preheat all our hot water with solar panels also. Investigating geothermal wells for heating and cooling. The building faces South with huge windows so we will design for passive solar gain in the winter. Also will use grey water technology for roof runoff and possibly recycle sink and shower water. Recycling and composting will be an absolute once we are moved in. Wind power? not yet clear on that. Post any comments. jeff
